Andrea's actions
Water
Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
I will prevent harmful storm-water runoff to the Puget Sound and/or Pacific Ocean and increase absorbency by mulching the base of plants and trees at my home or work.
Nature
Leave No Trace
I will practice the seven principles of Leave No Trace when doing nature activities alone or with family and friends to minimize my downstream impact in my watershed.
Education
Share my connection with Orcas through art
I will make a piece of art that connects my life to the life of Orcas and Salmon, and share it on social media.
Education
Educate my family or friends
Spend 15 minutes educating my family/friends about Southern Resident Orca Whales and their endangered food supply.
Education
Participate in Orca Trivia Night
Get your trivia on! In partnership with Northwest Straits Foundation, Whidbey Island Conservation District is holding a trivia night themed all things Orca, Salmon, and Marine Habitat. Thursday, Oct. 15 at 7pm.
Education
Join the Orca Forum to learn from local researchers
Learn about orca research taking place in the Puget Sound in this workshop put on by Whidbey Island CD in partnership with Northwest Straits Foundation and County Marine Resource Committees. Wednesday, Oct. 14 5:30-7pm
Waste
Support Pollution Reduction
I will spend 15 minutes learning about water and air quality issues in my area, how they are impacting orca and environmental health, and how I can help.
Transportation
Go by Bike
I will commute by bike 5 mile(s) per day and avoid sending up to 2.66 lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere AND avoid sending exhaust particles and tire pollution into stormwater that impacts Orca and salmon health.
Transportation
Drive Less
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips thus avoid sending exhaust particles and tire pollution into stormwater that impacts Orca and salmon health.
Transportation
I will be Whale Wise as a Marine Boater or Paddler
I will spend 15 minutes learning about local marine laws pertaining to orcas, responsible boat maintenance techniques, and will follow the Be Whale Wise guidelines.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 2 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Waste
Pick up Trash
I will pick up and properly dispose of litter on a daily walk through my neighborhood, since stormwater will otherwise carry it to the Puget Sound and/or the Pacific Ocean.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Andrea Dixon 11/03/2020 9:36 PMPracticing safe paddling in the mouth of Shawnigan Creek looking into the end of Mill Bay. It was a perfect afternoon of hanging with my wildlife neighbours. I did have a Omer f concern when a very large Stellar Sea Lion surfaced quite close as I was enjoying my sandwich. I did not have enough to share. 😁-

Andrea Dixon 10/30/2020 8:50 PMToday we finished off our garbage walk and completed the rest of Mill Bay Rd ( approx 4 km round trip ) We were actually pretty pleased with how little we found . There was another bag, not quite full, that had already been amalgamated into the larger trash at photo time.
You know, I don't just send trash pictures to anyone : ) -
Andrea Dixon 10/21/2020 8:53 PMToday we visited Goldstream River at the base of the Malahat on Vancouver Island. I have visited Goldstream every summer and fall throughout my childhood, and now, since we have moved back to The Island. It is early in the season, but we did see two salmon completing their life's journey. I was lucky enough to get a few pictures. I hope you enjoy them. -

Andrea Dixon 10/15/2020 10:24 PMWe usually do a trash pick-up on our street once a month. Today I did a 2 km street and beach loop. I am happy to say that there was very little on the beach, really only enough to fill a Tim Hortons cup. The street 200 metres above the beach produced a fair bit more. Most interesting find was a Walmart bag with underwear in it...Ewww. The recyclables will be added to our household trip to the Depot, and donated to SIMRS this month : )
