I took my dog for a walk on Florencia Bay and picked up trash as I went. I mostly found rope from fishing gear, small bits of hard plastics, styrofoam, some cans, a water bottle and water bottle caps.

I refreshed my knowledge on the effects and dangers of plastic waste in our oceans by watching "A Plastic Ocean" on Netflix and creating a work assignment for students around plastic and how to reduce plastic waste for our Ocean Literacy Program. Did you know 90% of seabirds will ingest plastic in their lifetime? Gross!

What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

When I find myself without a re-usable bag - or are not able to use one because of Covid-19 - I try to carry things with my hands or I use a cardboard box provided by the grocery store. It's so great that the Co-Op does not give out plastic bags anymore!

I feel lucky to live in a community that does not use plastic straws, rather paper ones! I also have glass straws at home for my own use.

Once our compost is ready my household will use it as fertilizer in our green house where we grow our own greens, tomatoes, beets, cucumbers, herbs, strawberries and peas.
