Arielle's actions

Waste

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our Puget Sound and/or Pacific Ocean waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

COMPLETED 10
DAILY ACTIONS

Community

Support Environmental Initiatives lead by People of Color

Racial inequity is both a sustainability and justice problem. I will support and seek out conservation organizations lead by people of color in my community, as their efforts address environmental justice, Puget Soundand/or Pacific Ocean health.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Community

Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns

I will spend 10 minutes researching environmental justice concerns that effect people and the connection to downstream fish and wildlife, their causes, and local initiatives to address these concerns.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

Install a Low-Flow Showerhead

I will save up to 15 gallons (56 L) of water a day by installing a low-flow showerhead.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Education

Educate my family or friends

Spend 10 minutes educating my family/friends about Southern Resident Orca Whales and their endangered food supply.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Transportation

Use a Carwash

When I wash my car I will always take it to a commercial car wash facility to avoid driveway drainage of toxic chemicals entering the storm drain and local waterways, poisoning fish and Orcas in Puget Sound and/or the Pacific Ocean.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Transportation

Drive Less

I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips thus avoid sending exhaust particles and tire pollution into stormwater that impacts Orca and salmon health.

COMPLETED 6
DAILY ACTIONS

Transportation

Fix all car leaks

I will maintain my car/vehicle by fixing all car leaks and avoid leakage draining to the Puget Sound and/or the Pacific Ocean

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Food

Learn More about Food Deserts

I will spend 1 minutes learning about food deserts and find out how I can advocate for healthy and fresh Puget Sound food in my region.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Food

Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty

I will watch 2 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.

Privilege is being in a place of ignorance not having to know about racisim in envrionmental activism.  Weforum.org states it is "a form of systemic racism whereby communities of colour are disproportionately burdened with health hazards through policies and practices that force them to live in proximity to sources of toxic waste such as sewage works, mines, landfills, power stations, major roads and emitters of airborne particulate matter. As a result, these communities suffer greater rates of health problems attendant on hazardous pollutants."

Locally, the City of Tacoma and Citizens for a Healthy Bay teamed up to create the Environmental Justice Leaders Workgroup. It is good to know that local leaders are taking the initiative to coherts of change.

How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

I incorporate other "R's" into my lifestyle by using plastic tubs as storage containers. I repurpose glass jars. I repair my clothes. I recycle as much as I can.
