Hanna's actions

Waste

Reduce Single-Use Disposables

I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate, so long term, it stays out of the Puget Sound and/or the Pacific Ocean.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Water

Calculate Water footprint for household

To better understand what my high water uses are and where I can decrease my use.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

Turn off shower when shaving legs

This will drastically decrease my water consumption since the remainder of my showers are short.

COMPLETED 1

Education

Educate my family or friends

Spend 5 minutes educating my family/friends about Southern Resident Orca Whales and their endangered food supply.

COMPLETED

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by my local haulers or drop stations in my community.

COMPLETED 11
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Plastic Pollution Documentary

I will watch 1 documentary on plastic pollution and the consequences in small island states.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Waste

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our Puget Sound and/or Pacific Ocean waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

COMPLETED 13
DAILY ACTIONS

Food

Meet My Local Farmers

I will visit my nearest Puget Sound farm to learn about locally produced food and the quality of life of all involved in producing it to make better choices for Puget Sound when I shop.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Food

Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty

I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Transportation

Use a Carwash

When I wash my car I will always take it to a commercial car wash facility to avoid driveway drainage of toxic chemicals entering the storm drain and local waterways, poisoning fish and Orcas in Puget Sound and/or the Pacific Ocean.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Nature

Do Nature Activities

I will engage in nature-based activities alone, or with my friends or family, for 30 minute(s) each day to connect with the shared ecosystem in which I live and rely on. (This can be anything from going on a walk or hike, to noticing the leaves changing color, to reading a book with nature themes.)

COMPLETED 13
DAILY ACTIONS

Education

Learn about my watershed

I will spend 10 minutesIdentifying what sub-basin I live in and learning about my watershed's water quality, fish habitat problems, and options for volunteering.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns

I will spend 30 minutes researching environmental justice concerns that effect people and the connection to downstream fish and wildlife, their causes, and local initiatives to address these concerns.

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

It is really hard to do this during COVID. One way I'm doing this is by turning this goal into straws and coffee cup lids. I have saved on plastic lid and left it in my car. I have also bought one silicone coffee lid that I will have in my car or house. When I get a cafe drink to go from now on (which should be a treat until we can use our own cups again!) I will ask for no lid and use one of the two I have saved.

What did you observe while spending time outside -- through sight, sound, smell and touch?

I focused on how good the crisp air felt as I was running and the cushioning of the ground in Interlaken Park on the trails. It is really special to get to be outdoors during this time and I focused on that privilege.

Food Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
In what ways does your community practice food sovereignty and what would happen if you could not access those foods?

I watched a documentary on Tribes in the Salish Sea and how they have sovereignty with fishing and how fishing is a part of their culture along with a food source. If they are unable to fish because of US fish management practices it drastically impacts their communities.
