Kiana's actions

Water

Collect Rain Water

I will use rain barrels to collect water for outdoor watering needs because in summer a drop for me may be one less for salmon, which then warms streams or can impair salmon streamflows.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

Eco-friendly Gardening

I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and stop using fertilizers so my footprint in my ecosystem doesn't harm the Puget Sound and/or Pacific Ocean downstream.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Support Native Communities

I will use the resource links provided and spend 30 minutes learning how Washington’s Indigenous Communities are working to support Orca health, and what I can do to support them.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Support Environmental Initiatives lead by People of Color

Racial inequity is both a sustainability and justice problem. I will support and seek out conservation organizations lead by people of color in my community, as their efforts address environmental justice, Puget Soundand/or Pacific Ocean health.

COMPLETED 0
DAILY ACTIONS

Community

Remove invasive weeds

Recruit 2+ friends/family/neighbors and together remove invasive vegetation from our home/apartment building/neighborhood that is in a watershed upstream of downstream salmon and orcas.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns

I will spend 30 minutes researching environmental justice concerns that effect people and the connection to downstream fish and wildlife, their causes, and local initiatives to address these concerns.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Education

Support local schools with Orca resources

Share with my child(s) teacher or my neighborhood school pre-prepared curriculum resources about the plight of our Orcas and the healthy watersheds they depend on, for remote learning

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Education

Educate my family or friends

Spend 30 minutes educating my family/friends about Southern Resident Orca Whales and their endangered food supply.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Education

Help educate young people

Identify, lead and host simple environmental education activities, that help the Puget Sound and/or Pacific Ocean, for 2 young people I know.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Food

Meet My Local Farmers

I will visit my nearest Puget Sound farm to learn about locally produced food and the quality of life of all involved in producing it to make better choices for Puget Sound when I shop.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Waste

Recycle Everything I Can

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by my local haulers or drop stations in my community.

COMPLETED 8
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our Puget Sound and/or Pacific Ocean waterways. I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

COMPLETED 10
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

I will keep 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream, and downstream in Puget Sound and/or the Pacific Ocean, by using a reusable water bottle.

COMPLETED 10
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Use a Reusable Mug

I will avoid sending 3 disposable cup(s) to landfills by using a reusable mug.

    Hi TCD Team!
We are so excited that you joined our Eco Challenge Team. It is amazing to see what a collective impact a group can make. Already, as a team we have spent 165 minutes learning and prevented three plastic water bottles from being sent to the landfill! Over the next several weeks let's continue making a huge impact and being a part of orca recovery efforts in our community! #OrcaRecovery

Welcome to Thurston Conservation Districts Eco Challenge. Thank you for joining our team! We look forward to the collective impact our team can make on our community during the month of October. We are especially looking forward to focusing our energy on the recovery efforts of our Southern Resident orca whales. This important species is in danger of extinction. It is our impact that has led to this, and it is our impact that can lead us out. Our actions can make a difference, so join us in participating in the years Eco Challenge. Together let's be a part of the solution!
