Khadijah's actions

Transportation

Properly dispose of boat waste

I will learn where pumpout facilities are in the Puget Sound areas I go boating, and use those pumpout facilities instead of dumping into the Puget Sound or Pacific Ocean beyond.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Waste

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

I will keep 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream, and downstream in Puget Sound and/or the Pacific Ocean, by using a reusable water bottle.

COMPLETED 6
DAILY ACTIONS

Nature

Join An Outdoor Project

I will join an outdoor restoration project in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Remove invasive weeds

Recruit 2+ friends/family/neighbors and together remove invasive vegetation from our home/apartment building/neighborhood that is in a watershed upstream of downstream salmon and orcas.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Transportation

Use a Carwash

When I wash my car I will always take it to a commercial car wash facility to avoid driveway drainage of toxic chemicals entering the storm drain and local waterways, poisoning fish and Orcas in Puget Sound and/or the Pacific Ocean.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Waste

Use Reusable Bags

I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases further reducing plastics that may enter Puget Sound and/or the Pacific Ocean.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Water

Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants

I will prevent harmful storm-water runoff to the Puget Sound and/or Pacific Ocean and increase absorbency by mulching the base of plants and trees at my home or work.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

Help plant a Rain Garden

I will help plant a rain garden in my community to minimize harmful stormwater runoff into the Puget Sound and/or Pacific Ocean.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Waste

Use a Reusable Mug

I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to landfills by using a reusable mug.

COMPLETED 8
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Support Pollution Reduction

I will spend 30 minutes learning about water and air quality issues in my area, how they are impacting orca and environmental health, and how I can help.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

5-Minute Showers

I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers to minimize my water footprint, as in many watersheds, a drop for me is one less for salmon, which then warms streams or impairs salmon streamflows.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Where are your nearest natural bodies of water? How might they be affected by runoff?

Commencement Bay is the nearest body of water to me. Anything I see on the street goes to the drain!

Try it: Malasana squat -a wide open squat. Take the strain off your lower back and open your hips while pulling weeds.

Where does the greywater go after you wash your car in a driveway? Did you know that most of our street sewage heads to the Puget Sound?

Growing up, we either washed the cars on the lawn or made sure the water from the wash went into the drain that piped it to the middle of our other lawn that was sloped.

CHB truck got its first shower in a bazillion years last night. Made it under 7ft clearance. Party lights at the car wash! Whoop whoop!

Try it: End your showers with a cold water rinse. Start by taking a warm shower and then switching the water to cold for 30 seconds. Cold showers can help prevent muscle soreness, improve circulation, and reduce hair frizz.
