Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to landfills by using a reusable mug.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate, so long term, it stays out of the Puget Sound and/or the Pacific Ocean.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream, and downstream in Puget Sound and/or the Pacific Ocean, by using a reusable water bottle.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our Puget Sound and/or Pacific Ocean waterways. I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases further reducing plastics that may enter Puget Sound and/or the Pacific Ocean.
Waste
Support Pollution Reduction
I will spend 30 minutes learning about water and air quality issues in my area, how they are impacting orca and environmental health, and how I can help.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Laura Beck 10/02/2020 2:01 PMCoffee places like Starbucks and Whidbey Coffee won't use your own mug d/t Covid 19. I haven't been to either places due to that fact, But they do use papercups and sleeves. Unfortunately the caps for the cups are plastic. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Laura Beck 10/02/2020 1:57 PMI need to take the time to get my reusable bottle out of the cabinet, fill it and take it with me anytime I leave the house. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Laura Beck 10/02/2020 1:54 PMThanks to Covid most retail won't accept your reusable bag unless you pack your purchase yourself. Even though it may take more time to complete the purchase for the cashier I will participate in whatever it takes to prevent more plastic waste from polluting the land and sea. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Support Pollution ReductionWhat environmental factors affect human health in your region, and how do they affect it?
Laura Beck 10/02/2020 1:51 PMThe health of the Salmon population directly affects the population of our Orca pods. Roadside pollution from automobiles from rain runoff into the sea adds exponential amounts of poison into the ecosystem. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Laura Beck 10/02/2020 1:48 PMCarry my own stainless steel or titanium straws to use with drinks whenever possible. Putting them in my purse or backpack so they'll be ready for use. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Reduce Single-Use DisposablesBringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Laura Beck 10/02/2020 1:41 PMReusable wax cloths instead of plastic bags for sandwiches, pickles, fruits and snacks.
