Pat's actions

Nature

Join An Outdoor Project

I will join an outdoor restoration project in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Nature

Plant Trees

I will plant 5 tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard to combat climate change and reduce stormwater impacts to Puget Sound and/or Pacific Ocean.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Nature

Do Nature Activities

I will engage in nature-based activities alone, or with my friends or family, for 15 minute(s) each day to connect with the shared ecosystem in which I live and rely on. (This can be anything from going on a walk or hike, to noticing the leaves changing color, to reading a book with nature themes.)

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Community

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 2 hour(s) in my community to help watershed health that leads to the Puget Sound and/or the Pacific Ocean.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

5-Minute Showers

I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers to minimize my water footprint, as in many watersheds, a drop for me is one less for salmon, which then warms streams or impairs salmon streamflows.

COMPLETED 0
DAILY ACTIONS

Nature

Leave No Trace

I will practice the seven principles of Leave No Trace when doing nature activities alone or with family and friends to minimize my downstream impact in my watershed.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Water

Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants

I will prevent harmful storm-water runoff to the Puget Sound and/or Pacific Ocean and increase absorbency by mulching the base of plants and trees at my home or work.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Waste

Pick up Trash

I will pick up and properly dispose of litter on a daily walk through my neighborhood, since stormwater will otherwise carry it to the Puget Sound and/or the Pacific Ocean.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Do Nature Activities
What did you observe while spending time outside -- through sight, sound, smell and touch?

Watching and hearing the hummingbirds and other birds flying around my yard; the smell of fresh rain and moist soil; the feel of dampness on my skin.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Join An Outdoor Project
How well do you know the area you live in? In what ways is a deep knowledge of your surroundings -- known as a 'sense of place' -- important to you?

I feel it's very important to understand where you live and play. This sense of place connects you more with the community as well as nature. For example, knowing that rain water falling on your yard can make it's way to the creek where you walk can influence what you do on your land.

What is one thing you can do to help your community become more sustainable?

Reduce the use of plastics and minimize purchasing excess packaging; minimize watering; remove invasive species
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Leave No Trace
Educator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?
