Food
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean since the Puget Sound is connected to all!
Nature
Do Nature Activities
I will engage in nature-based activities alone, or with my friends or family, for 30 minute(s) each day to connect with the shared ecosystem in which I live and rely on. (This can be anything from going on a walk or hike, to noticing the leaves changing color, to reading a book with nature themes.)
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases further reducing plastics that may enter Puget Sound and/or the Pacific Ocean.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers to minimize my water footprint, as in many watersheds, a drop for me is one less for salmon, which then warms streams or impairs salmon streamflows.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream, and downstream in Puget Sound and/or the Pacific Ocean, by using a reusable water bottle.
Waste
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to landfills per day by composting my food, which reduces my climate footprint ultimately helping salmon and orcas.
Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 4 hour(s) in my community to help watershed health that leads to the Puget Sound and/or the Pacific Ocean.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate, so long term, it stays out of the Puget Sound and/or the Pacific Ocean.
Nature
Join An Outdoor Project
I will join an outdoor restoration project in my community.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Nicole Rosenberg 10/13/2020 11:18 AMSometimes places have bad tasting water or old pipes so when you use your refillable bottle it can taste bad. Or sometimes you may be in a place where the water isn't safe to drink at all and you need to purchase bottles of water. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterFive minute showers are an impressive step toward reducing your water footprint. What is the next step you can take?

REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
Nicole Rosenberg 10/13/2020 11:16 AMI've put a compost container next to my trash so I can compost food scraps every day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Nicole Rosenberg 10/13/2020 11:16 AMI always have a large supply of reusable bags in my car so that I hopefully don't ever run into a situation where I don't have one. If I don't, I'll just put items right from my car into my trunk.
