This weekend, we put our back veggie beds to sleep for the winter. Garlic in the back bed will over-winter with leaves from our big leaf maple and straw as cover and organic inputs.

    Food Meet My Local Farmers
When you know who produces your food, you are connecting personally to your complex regional food system. What are the advantages of knowing who produces your food and where it comes from? Do you think this might enable someone to advocate for a better quality of life for those who produce their food, both near and far?

Knowing where your food comes from is super important. It adds a sense of trust that local grocery stores may not offer. Absolutely! Knowing that there is a safe source of healthy foods from local farmer makes me want to eat healthier. It also reminds me that there are farms that are struggling during this pandemic and it breaks my heart. Buy Local!!

I've been playing with the Seek app a lot to make my urban nature walks even more fun. I'm impressed with how well it identifies common fungi, like this Poison Puffball from my front yard!

    Food Locally-Sourced Meals
If you were to only eat what is in season locally, what would be the hardest food item for you to give up?

The Pandemic makes sourcing food a bit weird, but I've been using Full Circle Organics boxes to source at least some local produce, and then splitting that box with my parents! I also brought home eggplants and squash from the Community Garden last week, that are going into tonight's curry.

Bell peppers! I tend to use these every week.

I spent my Saturday morning removing blackberry at DeMolay Sandspit Nature Preserve. It felt good to doo some hard work, get the blood pumping, and see the impact that only a few hours can make.

    Transportation Go by Bike
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience differ while walking, riding transit, biking, or driving?

I have a better attitude when I bike to work (taking less than 5 minutes more of my time) than when I take my car to work and have to sit in traffic. Better for your body and better for the environment!

Food Learn More about Food Deserts
What are the implications of access to nutritious food for a community?

When you don't have access to nutritious food, you can't grow or function at optimal levels - you may survive, but you won't thrive. When everyone in our community can afford and easily obtain fresh, local, organic, seasonal, sustainable food, we all prosper.
