Today is my birthday and I'm asking everyone involved in this awesome challenge to go a step further and encourage your friends and family to take on the pledge to reduce single use plastics and clean up our water ways! Plant a tree, compost your non-meat and non-dairy foods, and eat local! Visit n-sea.org for information on how you can sign up for local micro work parties to get more engaged with stewardship and restoration efforts!

    Waste Skip the Straw

I love love love teaching my son that some of our waste can be reused!!  often times for crafts, but it is still teaching him to consider before throwing away.

    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

During Covid and working from home this has been so much easier as I am not traveling as much.  But covid has also pressured retailers to not allow refillable mugs (or re-useable bags).  This solidified my behavior

Community Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
Who is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?

Low-income people and people of color are most effected by environmental degradation. Because of systemic racism and other systems in place in our country, these folks are living in areas where there's the most environmental degradation and cannot afford to leave.  This ends up causing health problems that they can't afford to deal with and we end up with a vicious cycle that continues to feed itself.

Many of the day to day containers that folks use, are great reusable storage containers, some vitamin containers, bread bags, and salsa jars are some great reusables. I use them for hardware, tacks, food, and let's not forget all the unbelievably valuable and treasured pieces of gravel, ribbon, and other plastic artifacts my kids insist on keeping. :)

    Transportation Contact my elected officials
How can you spread your affinity for boating and paddling, whilst supporting the natural resource you rely on for that enjoyment? What are laws for, if not to protect those without a voting voice?

I am a boater, and love to see wildlife, most boaters do, there is a balance. I have taught my son that we are just visitors in their home, we must leave no trace.  That includes noise pollution.  I signed the petition and shared this link with friends also.  http://chng.it/HnbcXnyb9Q.

    Water 5-Minute Showers
Five minute showers are an impressive step toward reducing your water footprint. What is the next step you can take?

I have found that playing music ( especially a ~5 minute song) while in the shower helps me keep track of time!

    Transportation Go by Bike
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience differ while walking, riding transit, biking, or driving?

Biking instead of driving around town gives me a totally different way of interacting with our community and our streets! Plus the exercise always feels good, even in this colder weather!
